We Build Cement Masons

A cement mason, also known as a cement finisher, is a skilled tradesperson who works on concrete surfaces to make them smooth, durable, and visually appealing. Cement mason work in a variety of conditions and environments. They can work indoors or outdoors, on projects large or small, and in all kinds of weather. They must be able to work well in confined spaces and be comfortable working at heights. The work can be physically demanding and may require prolonged standing, bending, and kneeling. However, for those who enjoy working with their hands and seeing the tangible results of their work, cement finishing can be a fulfilling and rewarding career.

To become a cement mason, you need to have a keen eye for detail, strong math skills, and the ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction plans. You will need to be able to work efficiently and safely with hand tools and power tools such as trowels, screeds, and concrete saws. Other skills that will be important include the ability to work well in a team environment, good communication skills, and a willingness to learn and adapt to new techniques and technologies.

Cement masons perform a variety of tasks on construction sites, including pouring and finishing concrete surfaces such as floors, walls, sidewalks, and curbs. They also install and repair concrete structures such as retaining walls, dams, and bridge abutments. In addition, cement finishers are responsible for maintaining and repairing tools and equipment used on the job. With the growing demand for new construction projects and infrastructure repair, the need for skilled cement finishers is expected to increase in the coming years.

How can I Prepare?

Preparing to become a Cement Mason requires individuals to be in excellent physical shape as the job demands it. To succeed in the trade, students are recommended to have a fundamental understanding of high school math, including basic algebra, and chemistry. It's beneficial to have the ability to quickly and accurately estimate and compute area measurements. Written and verbal communication skills are also essential to succeed in this trade. Consider participating in CTE programs in high school that offer coursework in math and science, such as geometry, trigonometry, and chemistry. These courses provide a solid foundation for the skills needed to succeed in this trade. Additionally, students may benefit from taking courses in technical writing and public speaking to develop their communication skills.
