We Build Construction Trade Professionals

Northwest Indiana is a region that was built with grit and determination, not from behind a desk. The construction of vast industrial complexes, commercial districts, and residential neighborhoods has shaped our region into what it is today. As the region continues to develop, the construction industry is booming with opportunities for young adults who want to pursue a hands-on career.

Whether you are interested in welding, carpentry, electrical work, or any other skilled trade, the construction industry offers lucrative opportunities for growth and advancement. Each craft requires specialized skills, and training is a combination of classroom education and on-the-job experience through apprenticeship programs. We encourage you to explore the various trade careers and find one that suits your interests and skills.

What is a "21st Century" Registered Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship programs in the construction industry are not for the faint of heart. To succeed, you must be willing to work hard and persevere through difficult conditions. The United States Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship defines Registered Apprenticeship as a “unique, flexible training system which combines job-related technical instruction with structured on-the-job learning experiences.” Most apprentices begin employment on day one, with incremental wage increases as they advance and become more proficient on the job. Construction apprenticeship programs range from 3 to 5 years in length.

Working conditions in the construction industry can be physically demanding, with a significant amount of lifting, climbing, and crouching. Apprentices and trade professionals may also work in confined spaces, extreme heat, sub-freezing temperatures, or at excessive heights. However, every apprenticeship program thoroughly trains students in safety and accident prevention, and Northwest Indiana's professional construction industry has nearly 15 times fewer accidents than the national rate according to a 2019 study.

If you have the determination and a unique blend of both academic and mechanical aptitude, then an apprenticeship program may be the right fit for you. The successful completion of the program will not only lead to a fulfilling career as a master craft professional but may also provide a college degree.

Do you possess the drive, perseverance, and commitment it takes to be the best of the best?
